Chhattisgarh – The Side of India Not Everyone Talks About

Chhattisgarh is one of those states that doesn’t really show up in the usual travel lists. But maybe that’s a good thing. It’s hidden right in the middle of India, full of thick jungles, crazy waterfalls, quiet temples, and tribal villages that still feel like they belong to a different time.

Most people don’t realise, but Chhattisgarh has some of the oldest tribal communities in India. Their way of life is simple, colorful, and totally connected with nature. When you visit here, you get to see their dances, art, and even taste their food if you’re lucky. It’s the kind of place where you see life in a very real, raw way.

And then there’s the nature part. Waterfalls that are wild and powerful, like Chitrakote. Caves like Kotumsar that make you feel like an explorer. Old ruins in Sirpur that have been standing quietly for centuries.

Chhattisgarh isn’t polished or made for Instagram. It’s earthy, peaceful, and kinda slow — in a good way. If you like exploring places that don’t scream for attention but still stay with you long after you leave, you’ll probably love it here.

Chitrakote Waterfall – Like India’s own mini Niagara

This one’s huge. I mean, wideand especially during monsoon, it’s just roaring like crazy. It’s the kind of place where you just sit there and let the sound of the waterfall wash over your thoughts. Not much commercial stuff around, which is actually a relief.

Small tip: Try going in early morning or before sunset. The light makes everything glow.

Tirathgarh Falls – Less known, but sooo pretty

This one’s tucked away inside Kanger Valley Park. You climb down a bit and boom — this waterfall just stuns you. It’s multi-layered and surrounded by thick green forest. Really peaceful, and great if you wanna take a break from crowds.

Kanger Valley National Park – Jungle with a twist

Not just for animals (though yeah, you might see some wild ones). It has these crazy limestone caves called Kotumsar Caves. You go inside with a guide and it’s pitch dark in parts. Kinda spooky but also really cool. There’s also a lake and nice spots for chillin’.

Sirpur – Ancient vibes

This place is full of old ruins, temples, and Buddhist stuff. Quiet, peaceful… like time stands still a bit. Not touristy at all. If you’re into old carvings and calm places, you’ll love it here.

???? Bastar – Tribal culture done right

This is where you really feel the soul of Chhattisgarh. The local people, the art, the festivals — it’s all very real and raw. I saw some amazing bell metal craft and even watched a local dance thing one evening. If you can catch Bastar Dussehra, don’t miss it. It’s totally different from any festival I’ve ever seen.

What to do while you’re here:

  • Eat the local snacks — especially faraa and chana samosa (simple but hits the spot).

  • Buy handmade stuff — lots of bamboo, terracotta, and tribal art.

  • Just talk to locals. People here are really nice and chilled.

  • Take a boat at Chitrakote (if the water’s calm).

  • Get lost in a haat bazaar (weekly tribal market) — full of energy and color.

Final thoughts?

Chhattisgarh’s not trying to impress anyone. It just is. Wild, peaceful, earthy. If you’re into slow travel, real conversations, and places that aren’t polished for tourists, then yeah, this is your kind of trip.
