Experience Kerala: A Natural Paradise of Hills, Backwaters & Beaches

Kerala – God’s Own Country

Kerala is one of those states in India where you feel like nature is everywhere. It’s on the southwest coast, between the tall green Western Ghats and the blue Arabian Sea. The place is famous for beautiful backwaters, tea-covered hills, calm beaches, rich wildlife, and a culture that is very colorful.

When Should You Visit?

  • October to March – This is the most comfortable time. The weather is cooler and dry, so you can explore all day without feeling sticky.

  • June to September – Monsoon season. It rains a lot, which makes the place fresh and green. If you don’t mind rain, this is very pretty and good for Ayurveda treatments.

  • March to May – Summer. It can get quite hot, especially near the coast, but if you are going up to hill stations like Munnar or Wayanad, the weather is still nice.

Places You Must Visit

Backwaters

  • Alleppey (Alappuzha): The most famous place for backwater cruises. You can rent a houseboat and float all day watching palm trees, birds, and small villages. The overnight houseboat stay is a unique experience.

  • Kumarakom: Little quieter than Alleppey. There’s a bird sanctuary here where you can see migratory birds.

  • Kollam: Good for longer backwater journeys, more peaceful and less touristy.

Hill Stations

  • Munnar: Covered in tea gardens and misty hills. You can visit the Eravikulam National Park to see Nilgiri Tahr (wild goats). Anamudi Peak, the highest in South India, is also here. It gets very cool and pleasant, especially from October to February.

  • Wayanad: More of forests and hidden waterfalls. You can trek to Edakkal Caves which has old stone carvings. Meenmutty and Soochipara waterfalls are nice spots to relax.

  • Thekkady: Famous for the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. You can do a boat ride and maybe spot elephants, deer, and sometimes even a tiger. There are many spice plantations to walk through too.

Beaches

  • Kovalam: This beach is very popular with tourists. The Lighthouse Beach is great for sunset. You can also try surfing or just chill in a beach café.

  • Varkala: Special because of the red cliffs along the shore. There are natural springs here and the view from the cliff is amazing. A bit less crowded than Kovalam.

  • Bekal: Known for the big Bekal Fort that sits right by the sea. Not too many tourists, so it feels peaceful.

Wildlife & Nature

  • Periyar Tiger Reserve: Best place for wildlife safaris. Morning boat rides on the lake are perfect to see animals coming for water.

  • Silent Valley National Park: Very dense rainforest, home to many rare plants and animals.

  • Parambikulam Tiger Reserve: Good for serious wildlife lovers.

Culture & Heritage
Kerala has a mix of Hindu temples, old churches, and colonial history.

  • Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Trivandrum: Very famous temple with beautiful architecture.

  • Fort Kochi: Old streets with Portuguese and Dutch buildings, Chinese fishing nets, art cafes.

  • Kathakali Dance Shows: The dancers have colorful faces and costumes, and perform stories from epics.

  • Onam Festival: Big harvest festival with boat races and flower designs.

Ayurveda & Wellness
Kerala is known as the best place in India for Ayurveda. Many resorts and centers offer treatments like:

  • Panchakarma detox therapy.

  • Herbal oil massages.

  • Yoga classes.
People often visit during monsoon because Ayurveda works better when the weather is damp.

Local Food You Should Try

  • Puttu and Kadala curry: Steamed rice cake with black chickpea curry.

  • Karimeen Pollichathu: Fish baked in banana leaf.
