MIAMI -- Best player. Jason Williams Jersey . Best game of his career. LeBron James clearly isnt ready to concede his MVP award to anyone yet. Dazzling from inside and out, James put on the best scoring show of his NBA life Monday night, pouring in 61 points -- a career high and franchise record -- as the Miami Heat beat the Charlotte Bobcats 124-107. It was the eighth straight win for the two-time defending champions, who are starting to roll as the playoffs get near. James made 22 of 33 shots from the field, including his first eight three-point attempts. "The man above has given me some unbelievable abilities to play the game of basketball," James said. "I just try to take advantage of it every night. I got the trust of my teammates and my coaching staff to go in there and let it go." His career best had been 56 points, on March 20, 2005, for Cleveland against Toronto. Glen Rice scored 56 to set the Heat record on April 15, 1995, against Orlando. James had 24 points at halftime, then added 25 in the third quarter. The record-breaker came with 5:46 left, when James spun through three defenders for a layup that fell as he tumbled to the court. "There was an efficiency to what he was doing," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "The rim looked like an ocean for him." Spoelstra walked into his postgame news conference with a confession: He nearly took James out after the third quarter. Good thing he thought better of that plan. "He was in a great groove, obviously," Spoelstra said. Al Jefferson had 38 points and 19 rebounds for the Bobcats, his huge night merely an afterthought. This was all about LeBron. "You take away his 61 points," Jefferson said, "and we still had a fighting chance there at the end." Yes, even the Bobcats were marveling at James. He was hitting from everywhere, even a pull-up three-pointer from about 30 feet -- Spoelstra joked it was from 40 -- late in the third quarter, as the crowd roared and the Heat bench jumped with joy. "Yeah, that was a designed play," Spoelstra deadpanned. "Weve been working on that one for a while." That was the moment, James said, when he knew he was in the midst of a special night. "I felt pretty good in the first half but halftime can always kind of derail things and slow things up," James said. "But I was able to get things going once again in the third quarter and I knew it could be one of those nights." Not "one of those nights." Even for James, this was like no other. Most points in a game. Most field goals in a game. Most points in any quarter in Heat history, with the 25 in the third. Most points in the second half, 37, by any Heat player ever. "Once he sniffed 60, we knew he was going for it," Heat forward Shane Battier said. "And the amazing part is the efficiency. Good Lord. Sixty-one on 33 shots, thats Wilt Chamberlain-esque. Thats pretty amazing. Incredible performance." When James checked out with 1:24 left, the entire Heat roster met him near midcourt for high-fives and hugs, and the sellout crowd gave him a standing ovation. A second huge roar followed when he waved to the crowd, as "M-V-P" chants rained down. Charlotte has allowed the two biggest single-game scoring totals in the NBA this season. Carmelo Anthony had 62 points for the New York Knicks against the Bobcats on Jan. 24. Chris Bosh scored 15 for the Heat, and Toney Douglas added 10. Chris Douglas-Roberts and Anthony Tolliver each scored 12 for Charlotte. "If hes going to shoot the ball like that from that range, theres nobody thats going to beat them," Bobcats coach Steve Clifford said. Miami was without guard Dwyane Wade, who got a night off to rest. Spoelstra stressed theres been no setback for Wade, who has been on a knee-maintenance program throughout this season and is averaging 23.5 points on 62 per cent shooting since the All-Star break. Wade probably didnt mind sitting for this one. It gave him a courtside seat for the show. James scored 11 in the first quarter, after which Miami led by three, and added 13 more in the second. His 24-point first half was the highest-scoring opening 24 minutes for the four-time MVP in nearly a year, helping stake the Heat to a 60-54 lead at the break. Jefferson was up to 26 at that point. He didnt cool off much after halftime, either. It just didnt matter. James, said Clifford, "was phenomenal." There was no way Jefferson or anyone else was keeping up with James, who had to listen to critics in recent weeks say that Kevin Durants scoring for Oklahoma City this season shifted the balance of MVP power. Not so fast. "Every night I go on the floor I want to be the MVP, of this league, MVP of this team, MVP for me, myself and my family," James said. "Ive set a high standard and I have to live by that." James made three three-pointers in the first seven minutes of the quarter -- he was 6 for 6 from beyond the arc at that point -- and when Charlotte bit on his head fake from the top of the key, James coolly found Douglas to set up another 3. A tip-in by James followed not long afterward and just like that, the lead was up to 83-63. Charlotte scored the next six points, but any notion that the game was slipping from Miamis control was quickly extinguished. James scored the next six himself, a pair of three-point plays to restore the 20-point edge and give him 43 points, already a season high. All that was left to see was what hed finish with. The answer was history. "I was happy I was able to make a few plays to help us win," James said. NOTES: Spoelstra won the Eastern Conference coach of the month award for February. Houstons Kevin McHale won in the Western Conference, and the Rockets host to Miami on Tuesday night. ... The Heat improved to 10-6 when Wade doesnt play. Theyre 33-8 when he does. ... Kemba Walker had eight assists for Charlotte. ... The Heat were 16 for 28 from beyond the arc. KAWHI LEONARD & DANNY GREEN (Spurs): 44 points combined on 17-21 shooting in Game 3. Both were very assertive and set the tone in the first quarter.  Brilliant! When these guys are playing the two-way game, the Spurs are a force. Wow. 2. D-WADE & LEBRON (Heat):  Combined for 44 points but 12 turnovers combined is not going to cut it. Wade, in particular, was ineffective in the first half, leading to the Spurs blow out. LeBron was terrific in the first and faded after that. They need lots more support, yet these guys are capable of being more impactful and in particular more efficient. Their sloppy/careless play fed the Spurs rout. They need better than that. 3. DEREK FISHER (Knicks): Not surprised by his aftermath of Steve Kerr going to the Warriors. Hell have Phil Jacksons full support. Now its about fixing the roster and figuring out Carmelo Anthonys status.  My one recommendation would be to hire experienced pro coaches who can help him in the transition from player to head coach. Phil Jackson was always smart to have veteran guys like Tex Winter and Johnny Bach with him. Job is tougher than it looks. Having older guys with lots of wisdom that arent angling for your job really helps when times get tough. Francisco Cervelli Jersey. Need folks that tell you what you need to hear.      4. BORIS DIAW (Spurs): Great move to start him in Game 3.  Tony Parker looks like hes playing hurt and doesnt have the same pop/burst in his game right now. Need more play making and a guy that moves the ball quickly to teammates. Diaws numbers are respectable at nine points and five rebounds along with three assists, yet he had lots of Gretzky Passes -- the critical pass that leads to THE pass (assist). Hes a wonderful passer with off-the-charts basketball IQ and when you put him out there its like having a second point guard on the floor. 5. HEAT DEFENCE:  Frist half was poor and overall giving up 111 points on 59 per cent shooting is a huge concern. Game 2 defense was sound but major slippage. Energy level was inept. Perimeter D and communication was surprisingly off kilter. Not typical of the Heat. Help and recovery and shot contests have to elevate. A shockingly poor performance for such a big stage. Lots to clean up. Ball pressure and compete level has to be back to form. Not as good a defensive team as past years yet not this bad. Expect to see much more focused group on Thursday. If not, theyre in huge trouble.  Pick it way up. CLEVELAND - For months, the Browns have analyzed college quarterbacks as if they were looking to buy a new house. Earl Mitchell Jersey . Theyve inspected each thoroughly, measured them, timed them, interviewed them, checked and double-checked their backgrounds to find out if one can lift them from NFL irrelevance. Its time to draft. Unable to resolve their biggest need since their expansion return 15 years ago, the Browns are expected to use one of their two first-round picks Thursday night on a quarterback. Will it be Johnny Manziel, the dynamic mystery man in this years draft, at No. 4? Or will they wait until No. 26 and grab one of the QBs likely to slide such as Derek Carr or Teddy Bridgewater. Or get a second-tier QB like Aaron Murray or A.J. McCarron? Will they trade up, move down, punt? Cleveland fans have been counting down the days until this draft, their hysteria stoked by the movie "Draft Day," a fictionalized account of the Browns manoeuvring to land the No. 1 overall pick. Its unlikely that life will imitate art, but the Browns seem prepared to get a quarterback — either to back up Brian Hoyer or supplant him — and first-year coach Mike Pettine is confident the team has done its homework. "I got to spend time with all of them, a good amount of time," Pettine said last week. "We talk about the it factor a lot with quarterbacks, just that type of personality, those traits that you want to have in your quarterback: a guy that is confident, assertive and poised, that can handle teammates when they need to be handled at things going on in the offensive huddle." With 10 picks, including six of the first 106, the Browns should be able to add talent and depth. Pettine understands they must choose wisely. "Its absolutely critical that we have a solid draft," he said. "We dont need to hit a grand slam." Here are five things to keep in mind when the Browns are on the clock: JOHNNY B. GOOD OR BAD?: Like everyone, the Browns have debated whether Manziels a franchise saviour or bust. Hope or hype? Hes intriguing, for sure, but Cleveland, which hasnt drafted a QB higher than No. 22 since Tim Couch went first in 1999, cant afford to be wrong. Manziel will likely be available at No. 4. But if they covet him, the Browns might be able to pass on him there and, using the No. 26 pick they got in a trade with Indianapolis, move back up and snag Johnny Football. MACK ATTACK: Pettines roots are in defence, and after Jadeveon Clowney, Buffalo linebacker Khalil Mack is considered the best defensive prospect. The 6-foot-2, 251-pounder has the speed and strength to play in any system. Pettine likes him, as does Browns general manager Ray Farmer. "He can rush the passer. He can play in coverage. He can do a little bit of everything," Farmer said. "This guy looks like the real deal." SLAMMIN SAMMY: A game-breaker at Clemson, wide receiver Sammy Watkins is the complete package. The possibility of pairing him alongside Browns Pro Bowl wide receiver Josh Gordon should be enough to keep defensive co-ordinators up at night. Watkins can catch the ball over the middle or stretch a secondary over the top. Watkins would also be a safety net in the event Gordon, who has been suspended for substance abuse, has an off-the-field slipup. UNDER PRESSURE: Farmers first draft is arguably Clevelands most important in decades. He was promoted in February when owner Jimmy Haslam fired president Joe Banner and GM Michael Lombardi. Now, Farmer has a chance to upgrade Clevelands roster and make a favourable impression on his boss, who has promised not to be intrusive. "He hired me to do a job, and hes going to allow me to do it," Farmer said. HAPPY ENDING: After so much disappointment and another coaching change — Pettine is Clevelands third coach in three years — the Browns can energize their fan base with a successful draft. As long as they dont reach, they should get a quality player capable of making an immediate impact at No. 4. Farmer knows this draft is vital to Clevelands success. "Its really the lifeblood of every organization," he said. Jets are now 4-1 in overtime. It was the first game since Paul Maurice took over behind the bench that the Jets allowed more than two goals. It was the 14th time the Jets have gone to extra time. The Jets have now won five of their last six. The Jets got the start they were looking for with a good forecheck by Blake Wheeler forcing a turnover that resulted in a goal by Mark Scheifele, his 10th of the year, the eighth Jet to get to double digits this season, the pass to Scheifele coming from Evander Kane. Kane has 14 points in his last 15 games. It was only the second time in the six games under Maurice that the Jets opened the scoring. The Jets then went on the power play and a pass from Jacob Trouba to Blake Wheeler who was in full flight down the left wing led to a goal, as Wheeler went five hole on James Reimer for his team-leading 19th of the year. At the other end of the ice Ondrej Pavelec made at least two outstanding saves, his best a glove save off Phil Kessel. Shots in the first were 12-11 in favour of Toronto. The power play goal by Wheeler was the Jets first in four games, after a 0-for-10 stretch over three games. The second period was a wild one. The Leafs got on the score sheet with a power play goal from Dion Phaneuf, but a power play goal by Bryan Little put the Jets back in front by two, his 17th of the year and fifth on the power play. Little redirected a slap pass from Toby Enstrom, with an assist to Dustin Byfuglien as well. It was the Jets second power play goal of the game, the sixth time this season the Jets scored two power play goals in a game. A screened shot from the blue line from Zach Bogosian made it 4-1 and chased Reimer in favour of Jonathan Bernier. For Bogosian, it was his second of the year from Little and Ladd as the Jets get two in 37 seconds. Troy Bodie got the Leafs to within two at 9:14 making it four goals in 3:01. The Jets then ran into penalty trouble and were two men short for just under a minute, but were successful on the penalty kill and are 7-for-7 on the season when down two men. Kendrick Bourne Jersey. Tim Gleason with his first of the year at 16:44 made it a one-goal game, 4-3, after forty minutes. Shots in the second were 12-8 Jets. The third period settled down a bit and was not as wide open, although both Pavelec and Bernier still had to make some good saves. Phil Kessel tied the game with 1:33 left scoring his 27th of the year, sending the game to overtime and setting the stage for Dustin Byfuglien to beat Bernier glove side off the rush to end the game with his 12th goal of the year. Andrew Ladd and Michael Frolik drew assists, as Byfuglien was moved back to defence for overtime. Final shots were 32-28 Jets. Enstrom led the Jets in ice time at 26:03, followed by Trouba at 25:39 and Bogosian at 24:15. Devin Setoguchi had five shots on goal, he also led the team in hits with six. Little was the top face-off man at 57 per cent winning 12 of 21. After having his point streak stopped at five Thursday, Little had a goal and an assist in this game. Wheeler and Byfuglien also had two-point nights. It was Pavelecs eighth straight start – he has won five of his last six starts. “At times every functioning part of our game was good,” said Maurice in his post-game news conference. “There were some stretches where we werent great but theyve got a good team and theyre explosive. But an overtime win on a Saturday night against the Leafs, well take it and enjoy every inch of it. Emotions can get away on you in a game like this but I didnt see that from our group.” Coach Maurice felt this win is another confidence builder for the team. On Byfuglien going back to defence in overtime: “Its an unbelievable luxury for us. I always wanted to go three forwards and one D in overtime and just go, open it up, trade chances four on four. Having Byfuglien move back is a big benefit for us.” The Jets are in Chicago Sunday night for the final game of the season against the Hawks (TSN Jets, TSN 1290). The ‘Hawks have won all three prior meetings this season. Its the seventh back-to-back of the season (0-6), and ends a stretch of three games in four nights. Dario Franchitti kept racing after the death of best friend Greg Moore. Taylor Chorney Jersey . He continued on following the death of former teammate Dan Wheldon. He was eager to drive into his early 40s. He wont get the chance. The three-time Indianapolis 500 winner and four-time IndyCar Series champion reluctantly and abruptly retired Thursday, saying doctors told him it would be too dangerous for him to continue racing because of injuries sustained in a harrowing crash last month. "Racing has been my life for over 30 years, and its really tough to think that the driving side is now over," Franchitti said. Franchitti fractured his spine, broke his right ankle and suffered a concussion in the Oct. 6 race at Houston, where his car made contact with Takuma Satos car on the last lap and sailed into a fence. Debris from the accident injured 13 fans in the grandstands and one IndyCar official. The 40-year-old Franchitti underwent two surgeries on his ankle and recently returned home to Scotland to recover. "One month removed from the crash, and based upon the expert advice of the doctors who have treated and assessed my head and spinal injuries post-accident, it is their best medical opinion that I must stop racing," Franchitti said. "They have made it very clear that the risks involved in further racing are too great and could be detrimental to my long term well-being. Based on this medical advice, I have no choice but to stop." Franchitti did not use the word "retire" in a lengthy statement released through Target Chip Ganassi Racing, the team he joined in 2009 following a brief stint in NASCAR with Ganassi a year earlier. Franchitti was unstoppable upon his return to IndyCar. Teamed with Ganassi and driving the feared red No. 10 Target car, Franchitti reeled off three consecutive championships and won 12 races. Two of the wins were Indy 500s. He became the face of the series -- Franchitti always had crossover appeal for IndyCar thanks to an 11-year marriage to actress Ashley Judd, which ended in January -- because he was personable, well-spoken, popular in the paddock and passionate about the sport. It resonated with fans and made Franchitti one of IndyCars all-time greats. His 31 victories are tied for eighth on the all-time list, and his 33 poles are sixth. "Dario Franchitti has done so much for Target Chip Ganassi Racing, so it will be very disappointing to not see him in our cars next season," Ganassi said. "But simply put, Dario is a motorsports legend and will be sorely missed on the race track by everyone in the paddock and in the stands. His contributions to the sport of motor racing are too many to list, but I can tell you that they go way beyond what he has done on the track." Asked on Twitter if Franchitti had indeed retired, Judd replied: "Yes, with an extraordinary career, legendary achievements, aplomb & style." Franchittis last victory was the 2012 Indy 500, an emotional race that came seven months after defending winner Wheldon had been killed in a crash at Las Vegas. Franchitti battled teammate Scott Dixon over the final third of the race, jockeyed with Sato in the closing laps until Sato spun to bring out a caution, and led Dixon and Tony Kanaan across the finish line as three of Wheldons closest friends finished 1-2-3. It was a poignant moment for Franchitti, who was too familiar with death in the sport he loved. Moore died in the 1999 season finale at Fontana, and Franchitti to this day remains deeply affected by the loss. "Ill forever look back on my time racing in CART and the IndyCar Series with fond memories and the relationships Ive forged in the sport will last a lifetime," he said. "Hopefully in time, Ill be able to continue in some off-track capacity with the IndyCar Series. I love open-wheel racing and I want to see it succeed. Ill be working with Chip to see how I can stay involved with the team, and with all the amazing friends Ive made over the years at Target. "As my buddy Greg Moore would say, See you up front." Word of Franchittis decision spread quickly and drivers who never raced against him reacted with sadness. "I think to have him around and on the circuit is far better than him going an injuring himself again against doctors advice," said Nigel Mansell, who was at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, for this weekends Formula One race. But those closest to Franchitti were most affected. "Dario was a hell of a driver and will be missed -- missed by everyone in racing around the world," said 1963 Indy 500 winner Parnelli Jones. "He was my kind of guy. He wasnt afraid to put his foot down and go. It is really hard to believe that he had to give up racing, I know would he would have won more races, and maybe Indy a couple more times, had he been able to continue driving." Michael Andretti, who fielded Franchittis car for his first Indy 500 victory and first series championship in 2007, said he was shocked. "I thought he had one good year left in him, and I know he wanted to race beyond IndyCar," Andretti said. "So thats what I feel most bad about -- hes being parked by a doctor. Hes not going to be able to race the sports car stuff he had talked about. He wont race with his brother (Marino), Le Mans, all the things he wanted to fulfil." Dixon, who won the 2008 championship while Franchitti was in NASCAR, called his teammate a motorsports legend. "More importantly, I can call him a best friend," Dixon said. "There are very few people that have achieved as much in auto racing and knowing Dario, he wont go far as IndyCar racing is in his blood and I am sure he will stay involved somehow." Franchitti had lured good friend and former Andretti teammate Kanaan to the Ganassi stable for 2014, an announcement that was made at Houston two days before Franchittis accident. Kanaan said he was counting the days "to be his teammate again," but is grateful Franchitti will still be in the IndyCar paddock next season. "As much as it hurts not seeing him compete with me in IndyCar, Im delighted that he got out of that accident and is still here with us," Kanaan said. Franchitti defeated Will Power three consecutive years to win the IndyCar championship and the two developed a rare rivalry for the series. "We had some real battles out on the track over the last few years and I appreciated how fierce of a competitor he was," Power said. "His accomplishments in IndyCar are incredible and the sport will definitely miss him." His retirement leaves Helio Castroneves as the only active three-time Indy 500 winner trying to join A.J. Foyt, Rick Mears and Al Unser Sr. as a four-time winner. "I know he will continue to be a great ambassador for our sport and Im sure Dario has a lot more to contribute to racing, it will just be in a different way than driving an IndyCar," Castroneves said. Foyt, the only driver with more IndyCar titles than Franchitti with seven, said: "If the doctors tell him he should quit then he should listen to them. Im the opposite and never would listen, but I probably would have been a lot better off if I did. But Darios won a lot of races and championships so he has a lot to be proud of. My hats off to him." Franchitti could find a role with the Ganassi organization, or perhaps land in the television booth. Andretti suggested Franchitti would be a good fit as a consultant to a manufacturer. For now, everyone was still trying to adjust to the idea of racing without Franchitti on the track. "You pinch yourself everyday as firsthand you are witness to the talent, ability, work ethic and start-versus-win ratio of Dario Franchitti," Ganassi team manager Mike Hull said. "Having Dario represent all of us is whats right about motorsports. His representation of the integrity of a true champion is what sets him apart." Matt Niskanen Jersey . At the age of 67, Neil Warnock is back in work. Championship strugglers Cardiff have turned to the veteran manager in the hope of arresting a slide under previous incumbent Paul Trollope that has left them just one place off the bottom of the table. Warnock has replaced Paul Trollope as Cardiff manager Chris Ramsey worked with Warnock at Queens Park Rangers and sees the sense in the decision to turn to him. Neil brings a wealth of experience and a presence to any football club and his track record speaks for itself, Ramsey told Sky Sports News. Warnock certainly has form for turning situations around, most recently lifting Rotherham out of the Championship drop zone last season. With seven promotions also on the CV, hes capable of much more than that too. Heres a quick rundown of his greatest hits… Warnock appointed Cardiff boss Neil Warnock has been appointed as the new Cardiff manager. ScarboroughNon-league outfit Scarborough were competing in the Alliance Premier League when Warnock was appointed in 1986. The competition was renamed as the Conference with the promise of promotion to the Football League for the winners of the 1986/87 season.Scarboroughs hopes couldnt have been too high having finished 15th in the previous campaign, but Warnock made a swift impact by winning the title and thus ensuring the club became one of the 92 league clubs for the first time in their history. Watch NOW TV Watch Sky Sports for just £6.99. No contract. Notts CountyWarnock enjoyed perhaps his most spectacular success in his next job at Notts County. Having taken over a team languishing in the third tier in late 1988, he went on to achieve promotion through the play-offs in his first full season in charge.Remarkably, Warnock followed it up with another promotion - again through the play-offs - with the goals of young forward Tommy Johnson propelling the team to the top flight. That proved too much, however, with the team relegated in the following 1991/92 season. Warnock celebrating promotion with Notts County in 1991 Torquay UnitedSacked by Notts County in January 1993, Warnock was left feeling disillusioned by the game but was reinvigorated by an unlikely spell as a consultant at the Football Leagues bottom club. Whats worse, Torquay had endured a run of eight defeats in nine games.Warnock has since admitted it was a gamble to risk having a relegation to the Conference on his CV but masterminded a dramatic turnaround and safety was secured on the penultimate weekend. He recently described it as one of the happiest times of his life. Huddersfield TownHis next job was at Huddersfield in the third tier, and after finishing as runners-up to Swansea in the Football League Trophy in his first season in charge, there was a happier trip to Wembley the following year. In 1994/95, the Terriers were promoted via the play-offs.It was a memorable season given that it was the clubs first at the new Alfred McAlpine Stadium and the goals of young Andy Booth were critical in their promotion. Booth hit 30 goals including the teams first in the 2-1 win over Bristol Rovers at Wembley.Plymouth ArgyleWarnock made the surprise move to quit Huddersfield following promotion too the second tier and soon resumed his managerial career two divisions lower down with Plymouth. Madison Bowey Jersey. Despite being fresh from relegation, he quickly turned things around. After finishing fourth, Plymouth won promotion via the play-offs by beating Darlington 1-0 in their first match at Wembley. For Warnock, it was the fourth time hed won a league promotion through the play-offs. Sheffield UnitedAfter spells at Oldham and Bury, Warnock was appointed by his boyhood club Sheffield United in 1999. The early years of his reign were marked by impressive cup runs but his sequence of play-off successes came to an end against Wolves in 2003.However, once reunited with long-time assistant Mick Jones in 2005, Warnock took the Blades up to the Premier League as Championship runners-up. They would have stayed there but for a defeat to Wigan coupled with a victory for West Ham on the final day of that 2006/07 campaign.Crystal PalacePalace were 19th in the Championship when Warnock was appointed as Peter Taylors replacement in October 2007. He soon managed to turn things around with some bold decisions - including the introduction of 16-year-old Victor Moses within weeks. Warnocks list of promotions throughout his managerial career The changes had the desired effect with Palace climbing their way up to fifth in the table by the end of the season, earning their place in the play-offs. However, there was the disappointment of extra-time defeat to Bristol City at the semi-final stage.Queens Park RangersWarnocks next fire-fighting mission was at QPR. Despite describing it himself as the perfect time to come in, he arrived to find the team just three points above the Championships relegation zone in March 2010. That fate was avoided with ease.Indeed, QPR stormed to the title the following season with Warnock harnessing the talents of Adel Taarabt as well as boasting by far the best defensive record in the division. He was sacked in January 2012 despite QPR being outside of the Premier League relegation zone. Warnock in May on why he chose not to extend his contract with Rotherham Rotherham UnitedAfter an unsuccessful spell with Leeds, as well as a brief returns to Palace and QPR, Warnock was back to his very best during an extraordinary period at Rotherham. The Millers were in the bottom three when he arrived in February having lost eight of their last 12 games.Warnocks impact was dramatic and Rotherham soon embarked on an improbable 11-game unbeaten run in which they beat top-six sides such as Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough. You can watch the game live on TSN2 and TSN GO at 7pm et/4pm pt. Boston has struggled on its nine-game road trip, but can close the trek with wins in three of its last four games after a brilliant effort from Brandon Workman in the Red Sox 1-0 win on Tuesday. Workman (1-0) had allowed only a walk to Nelson Cruz before Ryan Flaherty laced a clean single with two out in the bottom of the sixth. It was one of only two hits by Baltimore on the night, with Andrew Miller, Junichi Tazawa and Koji Uehara finishing off the shutout after Workman stymied the Orioles through 6 2/3 innings. "He was outstanding, especially in light of the two different rain delays," Boston manager John Farrell said of Workman. Bostons pitchers made Mike Napolis third-inning RBI single hold up to give the Red Sox just their second victory in eight games. Chris Tillman (5-3) was saddled with the hard-luck loss after permitting the lone run in six innings of work. "I was really pleased with Chris," Os manager Buck Showalter said. Steve Cishek Jersey. De La Rosa absorbed the loss on Friday in Detroit, as he surrendered four runs in 5 2/3 innings. He had tossed seven scoreless innings in his season debut a week earlier. "I feel almost 100 percent like last time," De La Rosa said. "I just missed more pitches." Baltimore, meanwhile, will turn to lefty Wei-Yin Chen, who is 6-2 with a 4.13 ERA. Chen did not factor in the decision of his teams 4-3 loss on Friday to Oakland, as he allowed two runs and five hits in 6 1/3 frames. Major League Baseball has told its 30 teams they must implement security screening for fans by then, either with hand-held metal detection or walk-through magnetometers. "This procedure, which results from MLBs continuing work with the Department of Homeland Security to standardize security practices across the game, will be in addition to bag checks that are now uniform throughout MLB," baseball spokesman Michael Teevan said Tuesday. The Seattle Mariners announced Tuesday that fans entering Safeco Field will have to walk through metal detectors starting with this years opener. Boston, the New York Mets, Oakland, Pittsburgh and San Francisco were among the teams that experimented with screening at times last year. Security gained more intense focus after three people were killed and more than 260 wounded in when two bombs were set off at the Boston Marathon finish line. Cliff Pennington Jersey. "We conducted testing of these measures at the All-Star game and at both World Series venues last year, and we were pleased that it was effective and received without issue from fans," Teevan said. MLB is being assisted by CEIA USA Ltd., which manufactures walk-through metal detectors, and the security company GSIS. Big league teams have generally limited bags that fans bring to 16 inches by 16 inches by 8 inches. In an effort to increase security this season, the NFL limited the size and type of bags fans can bring to games. With the exception of medically necessary items, only clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags no larger than 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches have been allowed. NEWARK – The Maple Leafs are teetering on the edge of another late season collapse. Damien Williams Jersey . Five straight losses (and six in the past seven) now dot the schedule – matching their longest skid of the year – after they fell again in New Jersey on Sunday night, topped 3-2 by Cory Schneider and the Devils. Playoff fortunes that once appeared secure have slipped into a more precarious state with a troubling tumble in the past week. All-too-recently fighting for second spot in the Atlantic division, Toronto has fallen to the edge of the playoffs, now in the second wild card position – mere inches ahead of Washington and Columbus – with only nine games to play. “The bottom line,” said head coach Randy Carlyle after the latest loss, “is its a results-orientated sport and we have to find a way to stop the bleeding here and do everything in our power to regroup with this hockey club and get them playing to a higher level.” If not playing entirely badly these days, the Leafs are doing just enough to lose, be it through sluggish starts, highly visible defensive breakdowns, and ordinary goaltending. On this night they fell behind for the seventh straight game, allowed a pair of goals via odd-man rush and breakaway, and had their backup goaltender struggle again to come up with a timely save. “I dont think were playing that bad,” said Phil Kessel, who scored his 36th of the year in defeat, crashing into the goal-post in doing so. “[But] its a tough stretch Ill tell you that much.” Tough stretch, indeed. It was only 11 days earlier, after James Reimer stole victory in Los Angeles, that the Leafs appeared in prime position for their second straight playoff spring. They sat three points up on the Lightning and Canadiens, 10 on the Capitals, nine on the Red Wings, seven on the Flyers, and six on the Rangers and Blue Jackets. Five of the seven has since passed them over, only Columbus and Washington trailing – just barely, mind you, with games in hand. Its been a remarkable spiral in a very short window, different in that way from the infamous 18-wheeler collapse of 2012 which cost Ron Wilson his job. The Leafs couldnt emerge unscathed from that storm, but can they find a way out of this one? Pressure is building, time is ticking, and the race is kicking into high gear with the Blues, Flyers and Wings all on deck in the coming week. Concern was evident as they exited the visitors dressing room, one by one at Prudential Center, keen to the reality of whats at stake. “We lost five in a row here right so its building here,” said Kessel of the pressure. “Obviously we need some wins.” Five Points 1. The Struggle Continues His confidence all but shattered at this point, Reimer was yanked for the sixth time this season. He yielded three goals on 10 shots, his save percentage in relief of the injured Jonathan Bernier dipping to .889 in six appearances. The 26-year-old has not won a start in more than two months (Jan. 21). Of that sunken confidence, Reimer concurred. “Its never high after a loss obviously and getting pulled,” he said. “[But] as crazy as it sounds I know Im becoming a better goalie and obviously a better person.” Ever the optimist, Reimer explained why. “Its been a ton of adversity in many different forms,” he said. “And so when you can weather it and keep your chin up you just get better.” Appearing in just his fifth NHL game, Drew MacIntyre stopped all 14 shots he faced in place of Reimer. Where that leaves the Leafs crease with St. Louis on deck is unclear. Carlyle didnt know if Bernier (groin) would be available for the Tuesday affair. If hes not for the sixth straight game, its not hard to envision MacIntyre getting his first NHL start. 2. Finger Pointing The Leafs have been a poor defensive team all year, requiring fantastic goaltending most nights from Bernier to have success. Theyve not gotten such heroics in relief with Reimer. His days in Toronto soon to be numbered, Reimer could not fend off an odd-man rush late in the opening frame – Morgan Rielly caught up ice, Nazem Kadri stuck on a bad line change – beaten glove-side by Damien Brunner. Faked out by Patrik Elias when he snuck behind the defence on the second Devils goal, Reimer then yielded a late squeaker that ultimately drove the hook from Carlyle. “We havent helped him out one bit,” said Tyler Bozak, charged in his defence of Reimer. “Obviously its easy to pick on the goalie when things are going bad for a team. But its a team game. We win and lose as a team. We havent been playing near well enough to win games. It hasnt been him at all.” “Usually in this type of playoff atmosphere youve got to find a way to knuckle down and play a tighter brand of defensive hockey,” Carlyle said. “We seem to be able to give up those opportunities early and then we seem to tighten up as the game goes on.” 3. Season Gone Wrong Just a night before his first game back in New Jersey as a member of the Leafs, David Clarkson barely saw the ice. He played just eight minutes and 54 seconds in the 4-3 loss to Montreal, his lowest total (save for injury) since Nov. 5, 2010. A season gone wrong has seen no signs of let-up for the 29-year-old, who left the Devils last summer for a seven-year deal with the Leafs worth more than $36 million. From suspension to injuries to suspension to struggles to find a role, Clarkson has had few, if any, positives this season. “The way this years gone I could never imagine it,” said Clarkson, before facing his former team. His four goals and 10 points are matched by Dave Bolland, who missed nearly five months with an ankle injury, and Troy Bodie, who has garnered half the ice-time in 13 fewer games. Barring an unforeseeable late season surge, Clarkson would set career-lows in goals, points and shooting percentage (he missed 21 games) – his previous low for points coming in the 2010-11 season when he posted just 18 in 82 games, including only two on the power-play. And if there is one similarity to that year in Jersey to his first in Toronto its the power-play and his opportunity on it. When Clarkson exploded for 45 goals and 70 points in the two seasons which preceded his signing in Toronto he did so in large part because of the power-play. About a third of his production came that way in fact, the Mimico native totaling 14 power-play goals (31 per cent of the total) and 24 power-play points (34 per cent). His ice-time had not surprisingly sky-rocketed from where it had been previously (up to nearly four minutes per game a year ago). This season, that opportunity has tumbled back downward. Buried behind the more skilled likes of Kessel, van Riemsdyk, Bozak, Kadri, Lupul and Raymond, Clarkson has rarely seen the power-play – about 54 minutes total – and thusly has just two points from it. Combine that with a considerable drop in shot attempts and shooting percentage, far less crash and bang and an unending search for a clear-cut role and the season has simply evolved into a nightmare for the former Devil. He played 10 minutes on this night, stuck without a point for the 22nd time in the past 24 games. 4. Falling Behind When Brunner beat Reimer he gave the Devils a 1-0 lead and handed the Leafs their seventh straight deficit to start a game. They fell behind 2-0 for the fifth time in those seven games when Elias snuck by Rielly at the Toronto blue-line before faking out Reimer on the breakaway goal. Sluggish starts continue to be a problem for the Leafs. “Weve been playing from behind a lot lately and just been running out of time I guess you could say,” said Bozak. “Gotta have better starts and try and get a lead early.” The Leafs are now 8-19-4 when they trail after a period and 11-23-4 when their opponent scores first. Bozak and Kessel scored to slice the 3-0 deficit to one, but like their failed comebacks in each of the previous four losses, it was not enough. “Theres no easy way when youre down three on the road to think that youre going to consistently come back in the hockey game,” said Carlyle. 5. JVR Accountability Speaking after the game, James van Riemsdyk made sure to shoulder some of the blame personally for the Leafs failings. Though he had five shots and multiple opportunities on Schneider in a career-high 26 minutes, van Riemsdyk failed to score for the 10th time in the past 11 games. “Its my job to score goals and obviously right now its not good enough,” he said unprovoked on the subject. “Were not winning games, Im not scoring goals, and Ill have to be better.” Stats-Pack 1-6-0 – Leafs record in their past seven games. 7 – Consecutive games in which the Leafs allowed the first goal. 8-19-4 – Leafs record this season when trailing after the first period. 1 – Goal for James van Riemsdyk in the past 11 games. 10:00 – Ice-time for David Clarkson in his first game back to New Jersey. 26:14 – Ice-time for van Riemsdyk, a career-high. 36 – Goals for Phil Kessel, one off matching a career-high. .889 – Save percentage for James Reimer in place of Jonathan Bernier (six appearances). Toller Cranston, a larger-than-life star on and off the ice who helped revolutionize the sport, died at his home in Mexico from an apparent heart attack, a Skate Canada spokesperson said Saturday. He was 65.Cranston, a six-time Canadian senior mens champion who won bronze at the 1974 world championships and 1976 Olympics, was known for his dramatic showmanship on the ice. While he never won an Olympic or world title, his unique artistic vision forever changed the sport. There was a moment of silence in his honour between the mens event and the ice dance Saturday night at the Canadian figure skating championships in Kingston, Ont.In a sport that later became full of high-flyers replete with arsenals of quad jumps, Cranston was all about the artistry. He is his own work of art, the Globe and Mail wrote in 2003.When he hung up his skates, Cranston kept on creating with a paintbrush. He was one of a kind, said Brian Orser, a former Canadian and world champion, Olympic silver medallist and now in-demand coach. Nobody will ever be like him. And such a great contribution to figure skating but me, personally, (it was) just his sense of humour and his outlook on life and (his) free spirit ... (he was) somewhat of a rebel. Always spoke his mind, wasnt always so accurate but he spoke his mind.A member of Canadas Sports Hall of Fame since 1977, Cranston was always one of a kind.A skater with a painter’s eye, his original artistry and dramatic showmanship on ice broke new ground in figure skating and thrilled audiences, said Skate Canada.Cranston was born in Hamilton, grew up in Kirkland Lake, Ont., and Montreal before settling in Mexico once his skating days were done.He was also an avid artist and his work was exhibited in galleries and museums around the world. He lived a unique life, cycling in and out of the public eye after his skating career. In his 2000 book When Hell Freezes Over, Should I Bring My Skates? Cranston wrote of knocking hockey star Wayne Gretzky off a bicycle, chasing jazz singer Nina Simone down a Montreal street trying to recover a fur coat, of his costume sticking to the ice on the Rideau Canal during an outdoor show in Ottawa, and much, much more.Within the skating world, Ive been privileged to have had a textured and multifaceted career, he told The Canadian Press in an interview at the time.Im not blowing my own horn. Im just making a point. With all the other things that surround my skating career, what skater in Canada or in the world has done those things? Nobody. When Hell Freezes Over, Should I Bring My Skates? was a sequel to his 1997 autobiography Zero Tolerance.Olympic pairs silver medallist Debbi Wilkes trained with Cranston in the later years of her career, when Cranstons career was just getting going. He was a crazy person, but absolutely mesmerizing, an artistic genius even then, she said.Wilkes recalls one particular practice when the two were standing along the boards. He had tears in his eyes and he said Nobody understands, I have these ideas, things I want to do, but everybody just laughs at me, Wilkes said.Cranston won national titles from 1971 to 76 and placed second at the 1971 North American championships in Peterborough, Ont. He won Skate Canada Internaational events in 1973 and 75. Chad Henne Jersey. He finished fourth at the 1975 world championships in Colorado Springs, and was fourth again a year later in Goteborg, Sweden.Cranston was 26 when he reached the Olympic podium at the 1976 Winter Games in Innsbruck. He was inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 1976 and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1977.Toller Cranston was a stellar athlete and a trailblazer for sport in our country, Marcel Aubut, the president of the Canadian Olympic Committee said in a statement. His creative performances and artistry on the ice helped revitalize the world of figure skating, and his contributions helped inspire future generations of Canadian skaters.Toller was a passionate competitor and an icon to many in his sport. He will be truly missed and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.In 1995, Cranston received a Special Olympic Order from the Canadian Olympic Committee. He was also an illustrator, author, designer, choreographer and sports commentator. While Cranston had worked in the past with some skaters on their routines, later on in life he called himself estranged from the skating world. He washed his hands of the sport, in part because of the new judging system implemented following the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics that he believed had killed the skatings popularity and stifled its creativity. But he had no shortage of opinions about the Canadian champions who followed him.He called Elvis Stojko a great competitor, one dimensional. He applauded Orsers combination of art and sport and liked the dramatic element Kurt Browning brought to the table. And he marvelled at Patrick Chan.Im on another planet watching Patrick Chan with binoculars and applauding along with the rest of the world, Cranston said from his Mexican hideaway in 2012.I dont think I could watch him skate live, Id commit suicide out of depression at how good he is, Cranston added, erupting in loud laughter.Chan met Cranston once when he was a young boy training at the Toronto Cricket Club with his late coach Osborne Colson. You could tell he was special, Chan said of Cranston. Hes a unique individual and he only said good things about me, and of course Mr. Colson raved about me to him. (Cranston) was always complimentary and optimistic about me, which was so nice.Cranston did not shy away from confrontation, taking on the CBC after he was let go as a commentator. And his relationship with Canadian figure skating officials was stormy at times.Cranston returned to the public eye briefly in 2010 when he was a guest judge on CBC TVs Battle of the Blades. The judging panel eliminated defending champion Jamie Sale and former NHL star Theo Fleury.Cranston found a home in Mexicos San Miguel de Allende, savouring its history, perfect weather and interesting inhabitants. The people are as international as any town can be: London, Paris, Rome, New York and San Miguel. I have seven neighbours — six come from different countries, he said in 2012.San Miguel seduced me, he added.Wilkes last saw Cranston at the 2013 world championships in London, Ont.Nobody could enter a room or a rink the way he could. He loved being the centre of attention, she said. Autopsy results were pending. There was no immediate word on funeral plans.
